Ya just gotta love the groomsmen! But with all that fun they bring to the wedding, there are a few groomsmen responsibilities that are worth mentioning. With that said, I have put together a simple groomsmen responsibilities checklist and I have listed it below!
Groomsmen Responsibilities Checklist
The Groom and Groomsmen Attire
I have to say it, a lot of us guys are guilty of the famous “wardrobe malfunction.”
Sometimes to get things right, it doesn’t hurt to have some group effort in selecting the attire for the groom and groomsmen.
Speaking from personal experience, choosing the tuxedos for my friend’s wedding last year was also highly entertaining when all of us goofy guys got together.
It was even more entertainment during the fitting when we talked about what our waist sizes USE TO be!
The Bachelor Party
Although The Best Man is usually given the job of planning the bachelor party, he will often ask the other groomsmen for ideas or suggestions.
If the groom and groomsmen have the time, it’s nice to set aside an entire day for the bachelor party as it is good bonding time with some of the groom’s closest friends and family.
Keep The Atmosphere Light and Fun
Planning a wedding can be very stressful. Although the goal is for the big day to be perfect, we also want the entire wedding experience to be enjoyable.
While always acting appropriate and respectful, the groomsmen should try to help keep any tension in the air at a manageable level.
Attend The Wedding Rehearsal/Dinner
I always advise my clients to have a wedding rehearsal. Many couples skip this planning step and I never think it’s a good idea to skip it.
Furthermore, it usually only takes about 45 minutes to cover all of the necessary details.
With that said, one of the groomsmen’s responsibilities is to attend the rehearsal.
It’s always nice to host a dinner afterward as a gesture of thanks to everyone in your wedding party for attending the rehearsal.
The groomsmen should attend the rehearsal dinner as well.
It’s a great place to further coordinate wedding plans while everyone is together in one place.
Get On That Dance Floor!
That’s right! A wedding is a time to celebrate the marriage of the newly married couple!
With that said, the groomsmen should participate in a lot the dancing throughout the evening.
Some people like to dance more than others, but it’s important that the groomsmen show their support by joining in on the fun on the dance floor.
This is very rarely an issue as it usually doesn’t take much convincing for groomsmen to be part of the dancing party!
Be A “Go-For”
There are many components that must come together for a wedding to run smoothly.
With that said, the groomsmen must make themselves available to be as accommodating as possible.
It may be communicating something important with a wedding vendor, looking for a lost item (ex. someone’s phone), or anything else that they can do to reduce unnecessary work for the couple.
Back-Up Contact Numbers
As a wedding DJ, I always ask the couple for a few backup phone numbers.
Wedding vendors typically try to avoid calling the bride or groom on the wedding day.
On that note, it is helpful if a few members of the wedding party share their numbers with the vendors in case a question arises on the wedding day.
The groomsmen can help answer vendor questions which will reduce the number of distractions for the couple.
I Have The Answer!
Every person has a special skill or talent. The groomsmen should offer to share their insight in the area of their personal expertise with the couple.
For example, when I recently stood up in my best friend’s wedding, I gave him many wedding planning tips from working in the industry for over 10 years.
Regardless of the skill or trade, the couple should be able to call upon the groomsmen to extend their knowledge to help make their wedding truly amazing.
Stay Close By
Organizing a wedding involves many people. The members of the wedding party will often need to be present for special moments like the ceremony processional, reception grand entrance and wedding party dance.
With that said, it’s important that the groomsmen stay on the wedding venue premises.
There is a wedding timeline to follow and the wedding organizers should never have to spend a lot of time looking for any of the groomsmen.
Give The Couple A Wedding Gift
The couple has been truly blessed by the gift of the presence of every groomsman.
Although the groomsmen are part of the wedding party, they are still guests at the wedding.
With that said, one of the responsibilities of every groomsman is to give a wedding gift.
It does not necessarily need to be tangible.
If the resources are tight for any of the groomsmen, they may also provide a service as a gift.
