There are many important factors to assess when looking at a wedding DJ rate sheet to determine if you are being quoted a fair price.
I am going to cover the top components that should be included on every DJ rate sheet.
If any of these components are missing from the rate sheet, it is possible the DJ may add unexpected “upcharges” to your DJ package.
Wedding DJ Rate Sheet
Factors To Assess
Prices
This is the the obvious component of a DJ rate sheet. It is worth mentioning anyway, because I have seen DJ packages advertised with NO PRICES!!
If the DJ does not include prices on their rate sheet, they might increase their charge above their standard price. (For example, higher prices during busier seasons).
Everyone loves to see prices listed for services they are hiring in advance.
It gives them confidence that the person they are interviewing is upfront and straightforward with their service quotes.
Set Up and Tear Down Time
This is one of the most common factors of a DJ package that gets overlooked.
You must ask if the DJ you are interviewing if they charge extra for set up and tear down time.
If this time is not included as part of your wedding DJ package, it’s possible you may be charged extra for it.
One that note, set up time usually takes one to two hours. Tear down time usually takes about one hour.
This could possibly add an extra 3 hours of service time to your DJ bill. Be sure to ask about any extra charge for this time.
Travel and Lodging Expenses
Most DJs will travel up to about an hour without charging a fee for travel and lodging.
If this component is not included on a wedding DJ rate sheet, I would not be too concerned as it usually is not.
However, this factor must be addressed before hiring your DJ as it will often affect your total DJ cost.
A DJ will almost always charge extra if they have to travel over an hour or two.
In addition to covering their travel costs, the DJ will need to rent a lodging space.
They will be traveling home in the middle of the night and it’s important that they have a place to stay to ensure safe travels.
Dance Floor Lighting
Some DJs charge extra to add dance floor lighting to their wedding package.
If dance floor lighting is not included on the wedding DJ rate sheet, be sure to ask if there is an additional cost for it.
Many people assume that dance floor lighting is included with the DJ set up, but many times it’s not.
Some DJ’s also offer different dance floor lighting packages.
With that said, be sure to ask for a simple description of their basic dance floor lighting setup.
It also a good idea to see if they have upgrade lighting options available as well.
Wedding Ceremony Audio System
Almost all DJs will charge an extra fee to provide the sound system and microphones for a wedding ceremony.
It is common to think that this service is included in a basic wedding DJ package, but it usually is not.
A DJ must indicate on their rate sheet the separate fee charged to provide the sound system for the wedding ceremony.
If they don’t, they will often learn at a later date that the couple that hired them thought this service was part of their DJ package.
This could cause a lot of confusion in the wedding planning process and increase your total charge unexpectedly.
Wireless Microphone for Toasts
In my opinion, a DJ should never charge extra to bring a wireless microphone, because they are going to have one with them anyway.
However, I am still amazed that the number of DJs that will charge extra to bring a wireless microphone.
Be sure to look on the wedding DJ rate sheet to see if a wireless microphone is part of the DJ package.
If it is not, then you may be charged extra for one.
DJ/MC Planning Materials
Every wedding DJ that I know will provide music and master of ceremonies planning materials to their clients.
I have not heard of any of them charging an additional fee for this service.
However, I still think it’s a great idea that these materials are featured on the wedding DJ rate sheet.
Most couples ask if they have the option to make a list of all the songs they want played at their wedding.
With that said, it’s important for them to see on the rate sheet that planning materials are included with every DJ package.
Furthermore, it will give them confidence that the DJ will tailor their services to deliver a personalized performance.
Subwoofers
I’ve never charged extra to bring subwoofers with my set up.
However, I can understand why many DJ do.
“Subs” can be very heavy and difficult to transport. They can also significantly add to the DJ’s set up time depending on the layout of the venue.
If you do not see subwoofers listed on the wedding DJ rate sheet, be sure to ask if there is an extra fee for them.
Probably over half of the DJs will charge a fee to add them to their setup.
DJ Consultation and Venue Visit
Every DJ should review the song selections, timeline and venue floor plan with their clients several weeks before the wedding day.
It so important for them to be familiar with your venue prior to providing their services.
If your DJ has never been to your venue, I recommend that they make a venue visit with you and your fiance’ during your consultation.
Furthermore, if you are not available to meet at the venue, they should still visit the venue on their own before the wedding day.
This service is almost always included with every DJ’s wedding package, and they should feature it on their rate sheet.
This will give their clients “peace of mind” that they will take the proper planning steps for their wedding.
Additional Services
DJs usually offer several other services including uplighting, photo booths, monograms, projectors and other special dance floor effects.
In addition, it’s important for them to include these services on their wedding DJ rate sheet so their client know they are offered.
The DJ might feature several packages on the rate sheet that include these additional services.
Furthermore, “Bundling” several services with one wedding vendor can often save you money!
Finally, they may also have individual pricing for these services on their rate sheet indicating how much each service will cost if not included with a DJ package.

Northville Hills Golf Club
Northville Hills Golf is a beautiful facility with very friendly management and staff.
You will love this amazing setting for your wedding.
Let’s start with their impressive circle drive at the front entrance giving you and your guests convenient and classy access to the venue.
Next, you will walk through a charming hallway that leads straight from the front entrance to their banquet room with a beautiful vaulted ceiling and cozy feel.
In addition, one of the things I love most about Northville Hills Golf Club is its wedding ceremony space.
The layout for the ceremony is conveniently located right through the rear doors of the banquet room.
The DJ can set up the ceremony audio equipment off to the side on the patio staying out of the view of your pictures.
Below is a picture of the area behind the venue where many wedding ceremonies take place.
Imagine yourself walking down that beautiful aisle during your wedding processional and recessional! I love it!

Fox Hills Golf & Banquet Center
The Golden Fox
The Golden Fox is a luxurious indoor wedding space with a very large seating capacity.
The banquet room is decorated with full-size windows so you can see their outdoor wedding grounds including their lovely gazebo for the wedding ceremony!
There’s a lobby with modern accents including marble floors and artistic furniture that will impress you and your guests.
You will also love the gorgeous fireplace in the lobby that makes a perfect backdrop for your family and wedding party photos.
Fox Hills Gold & Banquet Center
The Summerhouse
If you’d like an outdoor feel for your wedding, then you will LOVE Fox Hill’s Summerhouse.
The Summerhouse is a lovely outdoor pavilion that is complete with string lights, dance floor, bar, electrical for the DJ and catering.
It even has sidewalls installed on the pavilion that can be opened to block wind and rain.
In the picture above, you can also see the wedding ceremony space pergola in the background.
It is nice and close to the Summerhouse making it easy to transition from the wedding ceremony to the reception.
The Summerhouse is surrounded by gorgeous golf course landscapes. These landscapes will serve as the perfect backdrop in all of your pictures for both the ceremony and reception.
Fox Hills Golf & Banquet Center
Fox Classic
If you love that cozy “log cabin-like” feel, you will love Fox Classic.
There several sections that make up the floor plan of Fox Classic. They include the dinner area, bar area, outdoor cocktail hour space, lounge by the fireplace and the DJ/dancing space.
A little insider DJ side note. It’s a nice touch if your DJ can bring an extra speaker to play music for the outdoor cocktail hour area.
In addition, there is a gorgeous wedding ceremony setting just outside Fox Classic on the golf course.
They also have a sheltered outdoor area as a backup plan in case it rains and you still wish to have your ceremony outdoors.
Check out the picture below of the wedding ceremony setting at Fox Classic. Wow!
Golf Course and Country Club Wedding Venues Michigan
Glen Oaks Country Club
Glen Oaks Country Club is in Farmington Hills Michigan.
It has a very colorful ceremony space with a garden-like feel complete with a charming pergola.
One of the things I love most about this Michigan wedding venue is the banquet room. This room has breathtaking vaulted ceilings like none other.
In addition, uplighting looks absolutely stunning shining up along these walls and into the ceiling as pictured below.
The banquet room is completely surrounded by windows giving everyone a breathtaking view of the golf course.
There is also an extended area in the banquet room dedicated for the bar, DJ, dancing floor and photo booth.
The floor plan of Glen Oaks was very well designed and makes transitioning from the ceremony to dinner and dancing smooth and seamless.
Golf Course and Country Club Wedding Venues Michigan
Brentwood Golf Club and Banquet Center
Brentwood Golf Club and Banquet Center is located in White Lake Township Michigan.
One of the things I love most about this wedding venue is the layout and design of the ceremony space.
There’s a lovely walk down the gorgeous outdoor staircase attached to the reception building for the wedding processional march.
There is also a breathtaking pergola that will look amazing in your wedding ceremony pictures!
Another very special feature at Brentwood is the beautiful row of columns in the banquet room that lead up to the head table.
They look fantastic when accented with uplighting as well. It’s important to note, if your DJ adds uplighting to these columns, it works best if the uplights are wireless. This will ensure a better cosmetic appearance and will reduce the chance of someone tripping on a wire.
The bar area is also conveniently located right next to the dance floor. This always works well for having a great night full of celebratory dancing!
Golf Course and Country Club Wedding Venues Michigan
Bay Point Golf Club
Bay Point Golf Club holds a special place in my heart as it is in my hometown of West Bloomfield Michigan.
I was actually a caddy at this club when I was young. I even used to boat and waterski on Middle Straights Lake which is located alongside Bay Point.
Speaking of the lake, it makes an absolutely spectacular backdrop for this gorgeous ceremony space.
In addition, Bay Point loves to show off this beautiful view with it’s full-size windows allowing you to see the lake from almost anywhere inside the banquet room.
They also have two large banquet rooms on-site for additional flexibility in choosing the perfect reception space for your big day!
Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club
Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club is located in Grand Blanc Township Michigan.
One thing that really stood out during my time DJing at this gorgeous venue was how well-staffed it was.
If I had a question for the management and staff I never had to look very far for assistance.
Everyone was so accommodating and a joy to work with.
This venue has a classy cocktail hour area just outside of the banquet room. This allows a seamless transition from cocktail hour into dinner.
Their banquet room is extremely spacious and flexible to work in.
If you are looking for a very luxurious wedding ambiance that will impress you and your guests, you will love Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club.
Lyon Oaks Golf Course
Lyon Oaks Golf Course is in Wixom Michigan
One of the first things that come to mind when I think of this beautiful wedding venue is how spacious it is. There is even more banquet room space available in addition to what you see in this picture.
The dancing area is just to the side of the dining area and has a ton of room to move freely and comfortably.
I should add, with all of this wonderful space, it still has a warm, personable and comfortable feel to it.
On that note, the hallway leading up to the reception space is also very well decorated including beautiful art on the walls and even a cozy fireplace as well.
Indianwood Golf and Country Club
Indianwood is located in Orion Township Michigan
If you are looking for a wedding venue with a rich history and renaissance ambiance, you will love Indianwood.
This historic venue has several different wings and rooms giving you that true “castle-like” feel.
There are two gorgeous wedding reception banquet rooms with impressive high vaulted ceilings.
There is also a dedicated wedding ceremony space that is conveniently located right next to the main wedding reception space.
As a DJ, I absolutely love the acoustics of these banquet rooms. The music always sounds very nice and full!
Furthermore, uplighting looks absolutely spectacular in these rooms. It will shine all the way up the walls and into the gorgeous vaulted ceilings. This will produce a brilliant ambiance for your wedding day experience and pictures.

What Does A DJ Do At A Wedding?
You may have asked yourself “what does a DJ do at a wedding besides play music?”
There are many additional responsibilities that a DJ must perform well in order to make your wedding day amazing. We are going to cover all of these responsibilities in this blog.
What Does A DJ Do At A Wedding?
(Before The Big Day)
One of the most important duties of a wedding DJ is to assist the engaged couple in planning their music and master of ceremonies details.
This planning should begin before the DJ is even hired as they should listen to the couple about their wedding vision and share insight from their experience.
Once the DJ is hired, they will usually email the couple music and master of ceremonies planning forms.
These forms will help the couple record ideas for their music, special announcements and dedications.
The DJ should always be available to answer any questions the couple might have for their wedding.
About 30 days before the wedding date is the perfect time for the couple to send the DJ their planning forms.
Once the DJ receives this information, they will get in contact with the couple to review all of their music selections and MC information.
I always think it is a good idea to have this consultation at the wedding venue as it is helpful to look at the floor plan while reviewing all of the wedding details.
What Does A DJ Do At A Wedding?
Set Up Equipment In A Timely Manner
A DJ should never be seen or heard setting up equipment once the official start time of the wedding has begun.
I’ll take this one step further.
The DJ should have the equipment for both the ceremony and reception ready with music playing before the guests arrive.
In addition, they should have the entire DJ area clean and organized.
This means that all equipment cases, totes and anything else used to transport equipment should be out of sight before guests arrive.
Provides Wedding Ceremony Audio Services
A wedding DJ will provide ceremony audio equipment at the majority of the weddings that they service.
This includes speakers, audio mixer, wireless microphones, computer and music.
They will also operate the sound equipment to ensure the audio mix is clear and easily heard.
Provides Music and Equipment For Cocktail Hour
It is not uncommon for the cocktail hour at a wedding to be in a different area than the reception banquet room.
With that said, the DJ should always bring an extra speaker and digital playing device to provide music during this time.
You may also want to ask your DJ to prepare cocktail music that is specific to your tastes as many will be happy to do so.
What Does A DJ Do At A Wedding?
The Grand Entrance
After the cocktail hour, the wedding DJ will usually line up all of the members of the wedding party to prepare for the grand entrance.
While lining up the wedding party, they will do a quick review to ensure they pronounce everyone’s name correctly (also done weeks in advance at the DJ consultation).
He or she will give basic instructions to anyone giving a toast on how to hold the microphone and how to project their voice into the mic as well.
In addition, the DJ should use this time to review the order of upcoming reception events with everyone so they are prepared. For example:
- Grand Entrance
- Cake Cutting
- Toasts
- Blessing (if requested by the couple)
- Dinner
- First Dance
- Parents Dances
- Open Dance Floor
Finally, the DJ will make their way back into the reception area and cue the music for the grand entrance! Here we go!
Master of Ceremonies
After the grand entrance, the DJ will continue providing music and fulfill the role as the “Master of Ceremonies” in most cases.
This includes announcing all of the upcoming wedding events, introducing the guests giving toasts/speeches, occasional “story-telling” (just a few fun/brief sentences).
It is important that they speak with sincerity and refrain from making tacky jokes.
Although the DJ has the microphone, they must remember the wedding is about the celebration of the newly married couple.
DJs should never use this time to make the wedding about themselves. Too many of them do.
Get People Dancing!
(and keep them dancing)
We all knew this one was coming!
Yes! a wedding DJ must get as many people dancing as possible. I won’t go into all of the ways that a DJ can get people dancing in this blog.
(Click here for information on how to pack a dance floor)
However, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention they MUST interact on the microphone with the crowd.
It’s always nice if they occasionally get out from behind the DJ booth to take this interaction to the next level (they don’t want to over-due though!).
If the DJ doesn’t personally entertain in addition to playing music, then they are not doing their job in my opinion.
I will say some weddings have rowdier guests than others when it comes to dancing, however, the DJ must always take full responsibility for getting people to dance….it’s that simple.
Tear Down In A Timely Manner
Many banquet halls have vendor contracts. They especially apply to DJs during tear downtime.
Your DJ may need to sign a vendor contract or they may not be allowed to provide their services by the banquet manager.
Most wedding venues require DJs to have all of their equipment torn down and out of the building in less than an hour.
It is important that the DJ meets these terms as the banquet venue may charge the client, the DJ or both for this extra time.
